People seek counselling therapy for many reasons. You don't have to be in crisis to benefit from it. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, low mood, relationship difficulties, stress, grief, trauma, or simply feel that something isn't quite right, counselling can provide you with a safe space to explore what's going on.
Still not sure? Contact me for a free initial consultation to find out more.
After the initial telephone assessment is completed, you will receive a contract with my terms and conditions, including privacy and data protection statements. You will need to read, sign and return this prior to our first therapy session happening.
In addition to a period of getting to know each other, the first session itself willinclude establishing what has brought you to counselling, what you'd like to achieve from it and to answer any questions you may have about the process.
We'll always work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
That's completely okay. Many people feel unsure of how and where to begin.
You don't need to prepare anything before for your first session. I'll gently guide the conversation, helping and prompting you to explore whatever feels important to you and all at your own pace.
Not unless you want to. While understanding past experiences can often help us make sense of your feelings and behaviours today, there is no expectation to talk about anything before you feel ready to do so.
While some people choose to focus only on what's happening in their lives right now, most find it beneficial discuss and explore earlier experiences which may have had a significant impact on their lives. Either way, we'll work in a way that feels comfortable, safe, and meaningful for you.
Absolutely.
Counselling is a space where all emotions are welcome. There is no right or wrong way to feel or express yourself and you won’t be judged for doing so. Whether you cry, laugh, sit quietly, or simply need time to think, our sessions are your space. Often, allowing ourselves to explore and express feelings we've been holding onto, perhaps unwittingly, can be an important part of the healing process.
For many people, yes. And professional research has confirmed this to be so for many common mental health concerns, including anxiety and depression. They indicate that the most important factor in successful therapy isn't how the sessions are conducted, but is the quality of the therapeutic relationship established between the counsellor and their client.
Online counselling offers greater flexibility. It removes the need for travel, making it easier to fit sessions around work, family and other commitments. Many clients also appreciate being able to access therapy from the comfort and privacy of their own home.
Despite the many benefits of being online, some people will always prefer the human touch of face-to-face counselling. It really is up to you which you prefer and we can discuss which option feels right for you, and perhaps use either one.

For some clients, therapy doesn't have to take place within four walls. Where appropriate, I offer Walk and Talk therapy in peaceful outdoor locations around Great Torrington and Westward Ho!
Many people find that being outdoors helps them feel more relaxed, grounded, and able to reflect, offering a different way to engage with the therapeutic process.
If you're interested in Walk and Talk therapy, please get in touch and we can discuss whether it's the right approach for you.

In my private practice, I work with children, young people, and adults, tailoring my approach to suit each person's age, needs, and stage of development. My aim is always to provide a safe, compassionate, and supportive environment where every client feels heard, understood, and valued.
There is no set number of counselling sessions.

Finding the right counsellor is an important part of the therapeutic process. It's essential that you feel comfortable, safe, and able to build a trusting relationship with your therapist.
If, after meeting, you don't feel I'm the right person for you, that's completely okay. There is no obligation to continue, and I'll always support you in finding the therapist who feels like the best fit for your needs.
No. Counselling isn't about giving advice or telling you how to live your life.
Instead, I'll work alongside you, helping you explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences so you can make decisions that feel right for you. My role is to support, encourage, and gently challenge you where appropriate, always respecting your choices and individuality.
